Before you fly

Expat travel checklist

Unlike a holiday, relocating requires extra preparation. This checklist covers what most people forget before their first expat flight.

1
Book 2 checked bags minimum
Most standard tickets include only 1 bag. Expats need at least 2. Check airline policy and pre-purchase extra luggage (cheaper than airport fees).
2
Carry original documents in hand luggage
Passport, visa, employment contract, insurance, pet papers (if applicable). Never check these. Make digital copies too.
3
Travel insurance with repatriation cover
Standard travel insurance is not enough. Get one that covers: medical emergency, repatriation, quarantine costs, and trip cancellation.
4
Book temporary housing BEFORE departure
Do not arrive without a confirmed address. You need it for registration (Anmeldung, NIF, etc.). Book at least 2-4 weeks of temporary housing.
5
Local SIM card or eSIM ready
Order an eSIM for your destination before flying. Airalo and Nomad offer affordable eSIMs for 100+ countries. You need a local number on day 1.
6
Cash in local currency (EUR 200-500 minimum)
For first days: airport transport, tipping, small shops. Withdraw from ATM on arrival (better rates than airport exchange).

What to pack

Expat packing essentials

Ship the rest. Fly with the essentials. Here is what experienced expats always take on the plane.

๐Ÿ“
Original documents folder
Passport, visa, birth certificate, marriage cert, apostilles, employment contract, university degrees (originals + notarised copies)
๐Ÿ’Š
3-month medication supply
With doctor letter and prescription. Many medications are not available or have different names abroad.
๐Ÿ’ป
Work equipment in hand luggage
Laptop, hard drives, chargers. Never check these. Voltage adapters for your destination country.
๐Ÿพ
Pet documents (if flying with animals)
Health certificate, vaccine records, microchip proof. Check our Pet Travel Guide for country-specific rules.
๐Ÿ“ฑ
Comfort & sentimental items
A photo, a book, a tea from home. Psychological research shows familiar objects reduce culture shock in first weeks.

Smart travel habits for expat life

Multi-currency card

Get a Wise or Revolut card before you fly. Use it for travel spending -- real exchange rates, no hidden fees. Link it to your home bank until your local account is ready.

Offline maps

Download Google Maps and Maps.me for your destination city before flying. You may have limited data on arrival. Know how to get from the airport to your housing offline.

Give yourself grace

The first 3 months are the hardest. Research shows the "culture shock dip" hits between weeks 4-8. It passes. Connect with the IC360 community when it does.

Cloud backup everything

Scan every document and upload to Google Drive or iCloud. Lost luggage happens. Having digital copies of your passport, visa and certificates has saved many expats.

eSIM on arrival

Buy an eSIM from Airalo before your flight. Activate it the moment you land. You will immediately have data for maps, translation, and to notify family you arrived safely.

Book admin appointments early

In Germany, Anmeldung appointments fill up weeks ahead. In Portugal, SEF/AIMA has long waits. Book your government appointments on day 1 -- not day 30.
